  • Unusual rear sight - what is it?

Can anyone identify this sight, please?

Attached is a picture of a small, block sight on a M1842, rifled Springfield, dated 1846. The sight base is an inch and a quarter in length and is positioned 5 inches from the breech. It is iron, 5/8 of an inch wide, and is graduated to 300 yards. The sight is soldered onto the barrel and is neither mortised nor screwed onto the barrel. I have seen three other sights exactly like this one, which suggests this is not something a local gunsmith did. Two of the other examples were on Model '42s and the third was on an altered M1816. At least three of the muskets are stamped OHIO, which may or may not mean anything.

I have some hunches on who did this and when, but nothing specific. I'd appreciate any information anyone can provide.

    Thanks,

    Jim

    Howdy Stranger!

I am cut off from my reference books due to their being boxed and stored during house remodeling for months...

WAG, it reminds me of the "Enfield" carbine/musketoon rear sight?
