  • help with equipment at Camp Winn, Alabama (1862)

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to find an equipment roster or quartermaster account for any and all equipment issued at Camp Winn to the 28th Alabama. Camp Winn was located in Shelby Springs, Alabama early 1862.
I am trying to hammer down a regimental uniform guide for the 28th Alabama. Does anyone have info about Camp Winn in general?
    Thanks!

You might try looking on Fold3. Many, many records have been uploaded there. You would search first by looking at the "Civil War" database, then go to Confederate Compiled Service Records, and choose the state of Alabama, 28th Regiment. From there, in unit information, you can find rosters for the staff and for each company. Use those to search the individual records for the people most likely to have signed a receipt (company officers, commanding officer of the regiment, quartermaster, etc.)

The next issue you will probably encounter is that you may find a receipt that says, for example, "9 jackets." That doesn't help us know what those jackets looked like. Photographs and diary entries can sometimes help with regard to this information.

You're in luck, because the letters of Joshua K. Calloway, from the 28th Alabama, have been transcribed and published: https://books.google.com/books/about...BAAAQBAJ&hl=en

If you haven't done so already check out the Alabama archives http://digital.archives.alabama.gov/cdm/

Fred Adolphus has also done a ton of research on Alabama regiments. He may be able to point you to a good starting point for your research.

        Thanks guys for the help!
I have Joshua Calloway's letter in my library and i managed to trace all of his messmate to specific people from the regiment. His name is misspelled in "The Gallant Men of the 28th Alabama." I also have Manigaut's and Walker's letters who were both in the same brigade as the 28th Alabama. Manigualt's was the Col. of the Brigade. I have managed to accumulate a large collection of photos from Manigualt's Brigade in general. The really early stuff is difficult to find info on and very difficult to research out of state. I have a few jackets that i can confirm that were issued to the 28th Alabama in particular, and a few jackets identified to Manigualt's brigade. I have also reviewed most, if not all, of Adolphus'es articles on confederate uniforms and plan on buying his Tait book later this year. The Alabama Archives have a few photos of officers from the 28th Alabama, and a photo of the flag. I plan on making a trip out there before the end of 2017 to look through their collections and see the flag.

        Thanks for the info though!

I highly recommend the Adolphus's Tait Jacket book. I am researching the 58th Alabama and finding information on uniforms is hard to come by. There are very few photos of members of the 58th in uniform. I know they were issued the Tait jackets in 1865. Other than that I'm not even sure what kind of uniforms they had throughout the war. I don't even know what kind of weapons they carried.

Thank Clint! Adolphus does an AMAZING job at providing well documented examples of specific depot made equipment. I am a bit lucky though, I have located a clothing account for Company E, the "Deyampert Warriors" of the 28th Alabama. It is organized like garbage, and has little to no description of the items received.
I am hoping to have a re-typed up version complete sometime in November of this year that i can share here. Whats very interesting is the lack of coats the 28th Alabama recieved between 1862 and 1864. I can count on both hands how many people in the particular company that recieved coats. EVERYONE in the company recieved trousers, shirts, and drawers. I would say for every 10 trousers, 1 jacket/coat was issued. Its odd coming from the AOT.
I plan on future research as well. Hopefully more photos will show up.

"...and a photo of the flag..."

Which flag did you find? The one with the cotton boll or the sunburst?

                Gil,
Sadly there is no photo of the cotton plant flag that was carried by the Marion Rifles, and later transfered to the 28th Alabama. The accoutns that i have read of the cotton plant flag tend to mix up the 2 flags since both where white in color on one side. The cotton plant flag was at the reunion in 1908, but did not make it there in time to be photographed with the starburst flag from the Alabama Archives. The last account of the cotton plant flag says it went to houston with the units chaplin. If memory serves me correctly.

The flag i was referring to is the star-burst flag that was captured at Orchard Knob in 1863. That flag is currently owned and displayed at the Alabama Archives.
