  • Help early war North carolina impression

Okay guys need help on what to wear for early war. I do a Impression of a volunteer company from North Carolina so no comments on the sack coat those were used by state troops not the volunteers. Any pointers on what jacket pants and head gear ?

The sack coat was not reserved for the 10 state troops regiments. They were absolutely issued to the other regiments as well until replaced by the jacket. They were still worn in the field well into 1862.

Your question is rather broad. I would recommend picking up a copy of Cadet Grey and Butternut Brown. There is a lot of good information regarding NC troops. Focus on a specific regiment or brigade for information. By researching the unit histories and quartermaster reports (if there are any) you will discover a lot of good information. Start with a narrow research base and broaden it if you find that the information is not available for specific units.

The books are readily available and there is a wealth of information available in free online resources. This topic has been discussed previously and there are some threads on the forum that you can access using the search function. Research is key. It is more important to understand why they wore what they did and when it was issued rather than just wearing it because someone said to. It may seem tedious but it will also open up additional information that will benefit your impression.

      Good luck and enjoy.

Kevin is quite right in that companies not uniformed by their local communities were generally provided for by the State.

FYI. attached is a page from a magazine article I did a while back on the early war uniforms of the famous 6th NCST that will give you an idea of the varieties of clothing in one early war NC regiment. Perhaps this will help guide you.
