The Union had a pioneers unit. Has anyone ever seen a reference to any similar organization in the Confederate Army?

I have not been able to locate much information about them, how they were equipped, etc. Just that they did exist.

Re: Pioneer Corps in CS
The first thing that pops into my mind is the eye witness sketch of Early's troops entering York, PA during the Gettysburg campaign. A group of pioneers can be seen leading the way: http://c8.alamy.com/comp/DXYA5G/conf...bal-DXYA5G.jpg

Re: Pioneer Corps in CS
Thanks for the replies. A friend is looking into her family and came upon a CS soldier who was listed as a pioneer.Jim Mayo

Originally posted by GenuineInformation View PostJim, you may want to check out references to the 3rd Confederate Engineer Troops. I had an ancestor who initially enlisted in the 17th & 18th Texas Cavalry (dismounted) who was attached as a mechanic to Capt. A.W. Clarkson's Company of Sappers & Miners. He, along with the larger part of Deshler's Brigade and apparently the Sappers & Miners, was captured at Arkansas Post, then exchanged and sent to the AOT. Capt. Clarkson's company became integrated into the organizational structure of the 3rd Confederate Engineer Troops, but the companies of that regiment were flung far and wide.
I have not been able to locate much information about them, how they were equipped, etc. Just that they did exist.
