Hello everyone. I've been researching a local skirmish here in Kentucky that involved elements of the Indiana Legion, who drove off a large force of Confederate cavalry with an assault up a hill. It seems that there is little info on the Indiana Legion in terms of equipment, uniforms, etc. Anyone have any idea how they would have been uniformed? Mix of Federal and civilian in uniforms and equipment/arms? If anyone has any insight, it would be much appreciated. Thank you!

The Indiana Legion is a name for the Indiana militia. Look at a good library for Frederic P Todd's American Military Equipage 1851-1872. The Indiana Legion was used for state service only. Some parts of the Indiana Legion partly formed the 13 Minute-men regiments raised for Morgan's raids. Indiana militia uniform regulations required blue nine button roundabouts, trousers and caps. In May of 1861 this changed and the Indian Legion were allowed to select uniform of their own choice with the governor approving their choice. In truth so many units formed that most only wore civilian clothing while, some wore state of federal supplied uniforms. When the Minute-men regiments formed during the Morgan raid most were indifferently dress with most in civilian clothing a few members of the Indiana Legion who joined the minute-men regiments might have worn state or federal uniforms or maybe some pieces of uniforms.William Carr
