"No firing all night, the Yanks still carrying off their dead. We are ordered to clean the ground in the rear of our breastworks, and make preparations for a regular camp ground, and everything looks like we were going to stay here always. There is still a cessation in our front, but our pickets are still at their posts. They talk across the lines, and occasionally exchange news papers, and our men give them Tobacco for Coffee."
One of Cleburne's Command; the Diary of Samuel T. Foster, Edited by Norman D. Brown

    OK:

Where do you get reproduced period newspapers for LH camp use, or trading with the Yanks, scenarios?

Nice repros of Harper's weekly are available here:

Are any other period papers being reproduced? Wouldn't mind getting some others.

      Re: Period reproduced newspapers

      Greetings,

I've seen various reproduced numbers of "Harper's Illustrated Weekly," "Leslie's Illustrated Weekly," the "Southern Illustrated News," etc. These are all available through various sutleries and at National Park Service gift shops (e.g., Gettysburg).

The problem is that, to my knowledge, no one is reproducing commonly-read newspapers of the day (at least in bulk). Examples of these would have been the "New York Times," "Richmond Enquirer," "Atlanta Confederacy," "Louisville Journal," "Louisville Democrat," Jackson "Mississippian," New Orleans "Picayune," Cincinnati "Enquirer," "Indianapolis Journal," "Chicago Tribune," Philadelphia "Inquirer," "Western Christian Advocate," &c., &c., &c.

Don't even get me started on such "ethnic press" papers as the German-language Chicago "Illinois Staats-Zeitung," Indianapolis "Freie Presse von Indiana," the Cincinnati "Volksfreunde," or the Louisville "Anzeiger."

      Regards,

          Re: Period reproduced newspapers

A note of caution on the Harper's Weekly link provided. I did an order online for 5 copies of an issue. They charged my card via Paypal and I waited a month until I called them. They "never got the order". They said they credited the Paypal account but it didn't appear on my latest CC statement.

You might want to call instead of doing it online......

            Re: Period reproduced newspapers

Our gift shop sells some decent repros of newspapers, 3 or 4 different ones, they are all northern papers, they sell for $1.00 each.

              Re: Period reproduced newspapers

I've had the same question for some time. I'd like repros for LH's and including in boxes/letters from home etc. I thought about hunting down originals but would prefer not to subject those to the wear and tear of an event.

Mr. Starbuck, would you mind telling which gift shop you are referring to (pardon my ignorance--I have the feeling everyone else knows which one you are mentioning) and also if there is a link or someplace I might find more specific information? Thanks!

                  Re: Period reproduced newspapers

Some years ago I recieved a mail offer for reproductions of complete New York Times. This was some time ago, but I imagine that this is still being offered.
