  • 11th New York second-issue Zouave uniform

Was perusing the wikipedia page of the 11th New York Infantry, when I came across this passage:

"The second uniform was issued when the first, not made of quality materials, fell apart on most men. This uniform was issued by the federal government, and to the disgust of the men, was not of the true Zouave style, but an American Zouave style. The new uniform had a dark blue Zouave jacket with red cuffs and red trimming with sky blue trimming inside the red. Blue fezzes with blue tassels were issued to provide greater flair to the uniform, as well as dark blue sashes, an issue of red overshirts (not firemen's shirts), and dark blue trousers." (Robin Smiths American Civil War Zouaves is the work cited for this passage).

Does anyone have or know of any surviving examples, photos, or artistic depictions of this uniform? Photos and depictions of the more well-known grey 1st-issue 11th NY Zouave uniform are not that hard to find, but I have had no luck finding anything on this 2nd-issue uniform.

    Hello Eric,

The second issued uniform described on wikipedia is based on a color print done a while back. The color print itself is copied off of the famous photo of Corporal Francis Brownell. In this photo though he is wearing the first issued uniform. The color print took this photo and painted it based off of bits and pieces of articles describing the second issue uniform. In short, this color print, and the description of the uniform should be taken with a huge grain of salt. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Jason. Do you know of any more accurate depictions or descriptions of the uniform out there?

Sadly, there is little to no documentation on the second issue jacket. What we know is that the regiment wore a mixture of red fezzes, blue fezzes, and red blue bound kepis. We also know that the regiment wore dark blue issued trousers with dark blue sashes along with leather leggings. The regiment also was issued red shirts and white shirts with blue piping.
