I am looking for dimensions for the 1,000 round wooden ammunition packing box for 58 caliber rounds. Interested in dimensions from original boxes and their sources and not repro boxes offered by sutlers unless based on an original. Thank you

Re: Ammunition packing box
Suggest you get a copy of the relevant Ordnance Manuals or an excellent source for minutiae on the subject is Lewis's "Small Arms and Ammunition in the United States Service 1776 to 1865". Or better, start perusing museums and private collections for original surviving examples to exam.Last edited by A Photographic Artist; 12-16-2017, 05:03 PM.Best,

Re: Ammunition packing box
Hallo!
The measurements in the Ordnance Manual are for the inside/internal dimensions.
But, outside dimensions vary due to the actual thickness of the boards being used.
And, some War-time boxes seem to be more lax. Meaning surviving boxes vary in dimensions slightly, as well as are found unpainted, with no handles, and with variations on labeling. Plus, some are nailed rather than dovetailed together.
