1842 Musket: Harpers Ferry Federal Use

I know the 1842 smoothbore musket saw plenty of service in the civil war. My question is: how common were Harpers Ferry 1842 models in Federal use during the war? I assume the confederates had plenty of the in-house stock, but did the Harpers Ferry model see common service by the union as well? Would having one or the other affect the musket's eligibility for use on either side in reenacting?
