  • Report on the Virginia Militia

Attached below is an absolutely mind-blowing account of the status of the Virginia militia in 1861, submitted by Governor Letcher to President Davis.

It includes the pre-war "annual consolidated returns of the milita, the Virginia Military Institute, and the State Guard, of arms in both arsenals and in the hands of the militia, are made up from returns of the brigade inspectors after the trainings in May and June and from reports of the superintendent of the Military Institute and superintendent of the armory to the 1st day of October last..."

from the OR|Series 4|Vol.1|pp.381-393 (courtesy Cornell MoA).

I would appreciate these as a PDF file (a single file, if possible), as I found the JPEGs unreadable on my screen. And bully work, Ryan!

      Bill,

If it is print size that is the problem, I can point at the document and an enlargement icon appears on the bottom right.....

Re: Report on the Virginia Militia

I've changed the original post to each file in PDF format. The problem is twofold: one I can't compress the PDFs into one file with my version of acrobat, two - when I re-uploaded the files, they went out of numerical order.

If someone wants to download them and compress them in a version of Acrobat with that capability and email it to me I will ammend my post attachments.

Glad you like it, it's a really great piece of info for those doing early VA impressions.
