  • Altered New York Plate

This site has a New York sword belt with an interesting history, since it was brought home from the war by a Virginia artilleryman in Lowry's battery:

This unit was at Monocacy, by the way, and also known as the Wise Legion artillery. The "NY" on the buckle has been altered, the dealer surmises to "NI" by the "captor." But I wonder? Could it have been altered prior to its loss by a New Jersey soldier, and the letters a crude effort at "NJ?" While I guess we'll never know, I'm interested in seeing if anyone has seen any other conversions similar to this. At any rate, it is an intriguing artifact.

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana

Well, if the reb altered the buckle, what could NI mean?
