Re: Inventories of Personal Effects Pt. 2

Interesting effects. 7 with cash or notes above $10, one listed as Confederate, a little specie and 7 with cash less than $10.

However, based upon the items, units and quantity of some items, it would appear that these were garrison troops manning defensive positions. Some, based upon the lack of effects, could have been frontline combat troops that died in a field hospital. Others could have sold items while ill to pay for food, medicine, etc.

If you stop and think for a moment that as the threat of attack on Washington DC diminished, the Heavy Artillery and other garrison troops were sent south towards Richmond and Petersburg, veteran campaign troops commented on the amount of gear these garrison troops had carried and then tossed away (much to the delight of the veterans as they were able to pick up some newer gear). Many souther cities did not have the ability to decrease their defensive forces for the threat of attack remained high.

The fellow with the $700+ could have won it gambling.
