    hello,

i would like to know what kind of entrenching tools would've been used by the soldiers during the war between the states. also where are some good places to buy these things and what should they look like ( what they are made of) and how would the soldiers carry them around.

    thanks,

This topic has been discussed in detail and can be accessed by using the search function. Try using key word "shovel".

I have some pictures on this page.

Welcome, Cadet. Just a tip for future reference, keep you from gettin' gigged by the moderators...unless 'Cadet' is your first name (which is actually kinda cool), you need to sign all your posts with your real, 21st Century name. It's a board guideline.

Bayonets and mess plates were very frequent used tools for entrenchment aswell. So was water buckets and skillets.

I’ve found most of my tools (shovels, picks, mattocks, axes, hatchets, adze, etc…) at flea markets and antique stores all over the state. Your best bet for a bargain is at the flea markets where you can haggle over the price.

Recently over in the for sale folder a pick axe went for $35.00!
Which IMHO was way too much! I’ve seen the pick axe heads go for only $5.00 and a replacement handle can be found for less than $20.00. You just need to know where to find a bargain and one that is correct.

                  Re: entrenchment tools

During a trip To Vicksburg I saw a origanal bayonet that was made flat and bent to form a simple digging tool that could still be attached to a rifle to act as a handle.
