Ok men, here a question for you. We all know federal Sgt Majors and 1st Sgt's were authorized to wear the wool NCO sash. Now is there any documentation of Zouave 1st Sgt's and Sgt Majors wearing them or did they wear the regimental sashes?
Ive searched till im blue in the face and only can find pictures of Sgt's wearing reg't sashes, but no pictures or documentation for 1st Sgt's and Sgt Majors?

Hey check out Shaun Grenan's website, The Zouave Database He has tons of photos of original Zouaves, so give that a shot if you haven't already. You could also probably email him about it - he is a Zouave freak and knows a whole lot about their uniforms and such. Good luck!

      Dusty,

Attached (I hope) are two close up images of a Sergeant (apparently acting as Orderly in this instance) and a prone Orderly Sergeant of the 114th Pa. near Petersburg.

On the prone Orderly you can see his sash as a dark band around his lighter Zouave sash with the tassels hard to make out. However, the standing Sergeant's sash and tassels show up very well.

So at least one regiment wore both types of sash together.

      Sincerely,
      Clint Brunt

There was recently a collection of uniform pieces "id'd" to a musician in the 146th NY. The collection (in addition to the jacket, fez, trowsers and haversack) also included two sashes. The first was the issued sash that the 146th wore, the second was a red wool NCO sash.

Don't know if they were worn together or not, but it's interesting to ponder.

          Clint-

Excellent photos! Thanks for posting them; the detail is superb and they certainly are most pertinant to the question at hand.

As an aside, some interesting points that I noticed (and you probably did too) on the enlargement of the sergeant lying on his side are the manner in which he is lighting his pipe with the help of a friend (I'm gonna have to try that method :wink_smil , and the fellow behind him with his jacket unbuttoned at the cuffs and the sleeves turned up like a day-laborer. Betcha he wouldn't have been caught that way at evening parade!

          Best Regards,

Thanks for all the help. You have outdone yourselves. Now if we can just get the 5th New York to join up with us when we do the 165th New York, or vice versa at an event, it would truly be awesome.

              Tom,
That's why the 5th Jackets don't have those cuff buttons, this way we're never tempeted to "roll em up".

Clint, I really like the photos. They have a lot of great detail to them. :)
