  • 51 NC Image

    Neill Maultsby 1833-July 17, 1864
    1st Sgt, Co. H, 51 NC

His image addresses a few recent topics.
51st originally issued Common Rifles. Enfields in 63.

    1) Leather rifle sling on Enfield. (Federal pattern?)
    2) NC Soldiers Cap prescribed in NC 61 Warrants. Plain strap, no slide.
    3) NC State Seal buttons. (Clear in original image)
    4) Painted linen box sling. (Clear in original image)
    5) Rectangular roller-buckle on leather belt, no billet. Note adjustment hole by cap box.
    7) Mule ear trouser pockets.
    8) Bright, clean look to Enfield.
    9) Reversed image.
    10) Tompion

Archival scan from original. Warning, I don't know what I did, but if you maximize the image it is huge, but not clear.

    Re: 51 NC Image

I flipped the image to show proper button/cap box/bayonet mount side.

Now the linen strap looks like a haversack strap though the shape on the hip appears boxy and held down under the belt.

Again, the original image I viewed is printed in the reverse as shown in post #1. There is an identical image in an adjacent county. I am going to try to view it and see if it was printed in the reverse too.

Great picture! It showed up well when I enlarged it. I love the detail on the cartridge box sling. Do you have any clue as to the date of the picture?

The 51st received the Enfields in mid '63 and Maultsby died a year later.
