      Re: wearing (Ill.) accouterments

The wearing of the box both on the sling and the belt seems to be a pecularity of Illinois troops. This does not mean that other troops did not do this, but usually when an identified image of the practice shows up it tends to be of an Illinois soldier.

I'd be interested in hearing/seeing some specifics. Not contradicting you, just never noticed it myself. Interesting notion!

        Re: wearing accouterments

I did not think the belt could fit through the loop and have the sling on, but I guess you can. Also, your welcome Mark, I was looking on ebay for photos of frocks and it was the first up.

          Re: wearing accouterments

The following images are from the Library of Congress' website and provide examples of how the soldiers wore the cartridge box. The images cover the period from 1861 to 1865.

            Re: wearing accouterments

Bob - those are fantastic photos! Excellent work. What jumps out at me is how far back the box is worn when not in use. That explains the "up under the armpit look of the sling from in front. All the slings that I can see are under the waist belt, none have belt through the box that I can see, except those without the sling. Anybody see anything different?

Also check out the canteens and haversacks, mostly worn right at belt level.

              Re: wearing accouterments

In MR Clayton's photos, it looks like a lot of them had almost everything pushed around to the back. I guess it would be easier to carry that way.

Also visible in some of the shots is the height the haversack and canteens were worn at.
