I have been reenacting for some years now and I have wanting to upgrade my uniform to be more authentic. I portray a Soldier in the 8th MS Inf or 39th MS depending on where i am at. I am looking for a shell jacket that would be fitting for these units, they both ended up in the atlanta campaign, then franklin, nashville, etc. but I didn't want a columbus depot shell jacket, i wanted to be different yet authentic...Any suggestions on jacket patterns and where to purchase one!

Re: AOT Shell Jackets
Sir,
The one thing we do on this forum is to promote others to do research ON THEIR OWN. There are hundreds upon hundreds of photos of Western Confederates on the internet.
Since you know the regiments you are portraying why not start researching what THEY wore.
At the top of the home page of this forum is "approved vendors". Click on that and talk with them.
CD jackets are time/specific, so having just a CD jacket isn't always correct.
hope this helps,

Re: AOT Shell Jackets
Sometimes you just have to go with what you can find, and sometimes there isnt anything. Im not aware of anything from either the 8th or 39th. You could always go with a frock coat, like the Johnson Frock at the Atlanta History center, he was in the 29th Alabama and mortally wounded at Peachtree Creek. Of note is that it was originally double breasted.

Originally posted by Ghostrider_58The reason for asking is because I have not been able to find much information on what these units wore. I know that Company C "true confederates" 8th MS wore a type of grey overshirt with blue trim. But I have nothing on the 39th or the rest of the 8th. I have looked at approved vendors and done research on these units for many, many years. I was looking for someone with a little more knowledge than me on Shell Jackets...and since i am new to this forum i would apprechiate some sympathy.
If you don't like military jackets you can always use a civie sack.

Re: AOT Shell Jackets
While it does not help you with your specific regiments, a good source of information on AoT/ western depot jackets, and a timeline of when they were issued can be found at:

Re: AOT Shell Jackets
Don't know why I'm wasting my time on this, BUT, the Department of Alabama jackets are considered a late war garment. English army cloth was coming through the blockade in 62 and being cut up for garments. There is an original shell jacket at the Sam Davis home that is documented to the AOT and considered to be midwar.
The battleshirts Mississippi troops had changed as far as trim color three times that I can find, from red, to blue to black. Either way, it wouldn't hurt to own one as a secondary piece, but if you want two jackets that will carry you through the war, as well as for the Mississippi area, I would go with a non descript frock and possibly a CD.Patrick Landrum

Re: AOT Shell Jackets
There is a picture of Warren Magee of the 39th Miss Inf in uniform, it looks to be a 6 or 7 botton front jean jacket, (he is seated, so arm covers part of it) with rounded corners, and a colored collar.
The picture of Richard May of the 39th looks to have a shirt that is completely buttoned up the front, w/ folding collar, and an 1842 musket.
I guess you have seen George Robinson, John and William Spell, Columbus Tullos, and William Ward of the 8th. (Tullos looks to be wearing a sack coat and "Georgia" framed belt, Ward, has a colored collar, the others, different styles of battle shirts)
Gearge Wilson of the 39th looks to be wearing a battle shirt, with a possible 1816/1822 musket.
An unidentified member of Co. D, of the 8th is wearing an 8 button frock, no trim, w/ epaulettes(sp?)
