  • Connecticut units question, as to a particular tailor

To whom may read this. My unit has had as it's Federal designation the 12th CT. for years. I recently ran across a tailor named "Gemmill, Burham, & Co. from Hartford, CT. A google search didn't bring up anythng about the company itself. Have any of you ran across this tailor ?
    Thanks

    Comrade,

Here's a listing from ebay for a trading card from that firm.

It's actually Gemmill, Burnham, & Co., not Gemmill, Burham, & Co. You simply left out the "N". They were merchant tailors.

I've found a few references on google under the correct spelling.

      Dennis,
Try the website for the Connecticut Historical Society (it escapes me at the moment). Also, drop Dean Nelson at the Museum of Connecticut History (at the Connecticut State Library) dean.nelson@ct.gov a line. He is a font of info on Connecticut in the Civil War and on Hartford businesses.
      Regards.

        Thanks pards.

I dropped Dean an email and I appreciate the correction on the spelling.
I'll let you know what I discover.

You could probably also locate them in the Dunn & Bradstreet records, which are held by Harvard University. I've looked up a couple Civil War tailoring firms there, but they will only give you access if you're researching a paper or article.

          Cheers,
