  • German Import Pics???

    Gentlemen,

I am in search of imformation and pics related to German imported rifles and muskets. Specifically the following: Prussian, Potsdam, and Saxon.

I realize this is very vague, but your assistance is greatly appreciated.

I do not know of any pics, but these types of 2nd rate arms were used to arm Suckers aka Illinois troops. Good place to look.

I would check units that were formed at the beginning of the war. Most of them are likely to be uniformed/equiped by private sources. The Zouaves d' Afrique (later became Company A 114th PA Inf.) a company of soldiers raised in Philadelphia, PA early in the war were outfitting with a "two-banded rifle, a Belgian-made copy of a British Enfield". (Hagerty,163). These soldiers went on to become the body guard of General N. Banks. I scanned a picture out of Hagerty's book of the unknown soldier and the Belgian rifle. Hope this helps...

This nice booklet has information on Belgian, French, and Saxon rifles along with two photos of Federal Soldiers posing with them. Also attached is an artilleryman in one of the Washington forts carrying what looks to be an Austrian or some other brand of import.

Are you looking for period pics of these guns in use or modern pics of surviving examples?

Modern Photos of these pieces would be preferable. But, period documentation through issuance records or images are also greatly appreciated.

            Thanks,

Bill Edwards in "Civil War Guns" goes into these extensively and though this book is considered by some to be outdated (published in the early 1960s) it is still an excellent resource and is commonly available.

Roughly without quotes, the state of Illinois made use of some 10,000 'Prussian' muskets.

Maybe I could dig up 'Arming the Suckers' if you want Ill. particulars.

Here is a photo of one of my two Potsdam muskets. This one is quite a bit rougher than the other, but this one was more accessable,so it got photographed. They have small differences between them, such as iron buttplate vs brass, rear tang sight on one,not on the other. They are big, heavy, solid weapons, and as well-made as any other musket of the period.
