Chums,
This morning's Lincoln Journal Star newspaper includes excerpts from the diary of George Dunkle of Co. D, 112th Illinois Volunteers. He writes of the shelling of Nov. 29, 1864, of being wounded at Resaca (earlier) and especially of interest to us -- the day-to-day activities of the average soldier -- as well as the battle of Franklin.
The soldier's diary has been transcribed and will be available at the Neb State Historical Society and the Library of Congress.
I'm calling the reporter to see how one goes about viewing this document.
Regards,
Paul Hadley
P.S. -- Dunkle and much of Co. D was from Woodhull, Ill. for any suckers from that neck of the Union.
