  • Fredricksburg Blanket???

    Hello,

A while back I asked the same question of anyone who had a good picture of the "US" sewn in the center of this blanket at the F-Burg Visitor Center.

I searched and found the reply(s) have disappeared. Anyone have a photo of this blanket handy they can share?

    Thanks,
    James Ross

        James,

The "Fredericksburg Blanket" (FRSP 130) is part of the curatorial collection of the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park. It is not currently on display, but is in storage. It was donated to the park in 1937 by a woman living in Fredericksburg, Va.

        The catlaog card states:

Brown, homespun wool blanket. Brown strip at top and bottom 12.7 cm from edge. Strip is 5.2 cm wide. "U.S." in long stitches in center of blanket. Used on battlefield by Confederate boy. Blanket is badly moth eaten. Edges are unfinished.

In addition to the schematic posted by Craig, here are some photos of the blanket's stitched "US".

The park does have a US blanket on display at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center, but there are no photos or schematics of the stitched US and its history is very vague.

          Mr. Mink,

Thanks a TON for that info and photos!!!

I hope you didn't go out of your way just for me - but in case you did...THANK YOU!

I was thinking of re-doing the "US" in the center of my 'Abe Thomas' and it looks like this should be an easier rendition of the letter style than I had before. Looks to be pretty loose and hastily made. I think I can manage that.

Also appears as if the blanket is a loose weave more and brown than gray???

          Thanks again and best,
          James Ross
