  • Forage/ Kepi / Slouch?

    Early, Mid, Late ,

"61 to "65. More interested in early to mid war . US/ CS use of issued Fed. ( Captured/ allocated, " lost",) gear. Particulaly forage hats.

I did use the search function and have a rudimentary understanding of the Napoleonic Wars.
    Kepis were de riguer .

Where does the abominable "Forage Hat " originate?
    Winfield Scott?
    The Mexican Unpleasantness?

Thanks for any education in this matter,

    Re: Forage/ Kepi / Slouch?

    Hallo!

    In brief and to over-generalize...
Some maintian that it was a recently promoted from engineer lieutenant to cavalry captain named George B. McClellan who served on a committee sent to "observe" the Crimean War from 1854 to 1856.
In addition to a saddle and fatigue blouse, in is 1857 report he mentioned the desireability of a less cumbersome cap for fatigue wear than the stiffeend M1854 cap. He said that he thought that the French forage type cap would serve that need.
Also in 1858 artillery Major William French noted that his men were taking the stiffening out of their M1854 caps for fatigue details. He thought they looked bad, and had four samples made up and circulated to the Quartermaster General.
In November 1858, a new pattern forage cap was ordered.

      Curt,

Thanks for the information. McClellan, eh? Now I have a reference to begin researching. I am more familiar with his involvement introducing tack of the same name to the U.S.

Would you know if your Major William French ( U.S 1858 ) might be related to Brig. Gen . Samuel G. French, 36th NC Regiment ( C.S. 1862)? Fort St. Philips, Brunswick Co. N.C.?

" The Wilmington Campaign, Last Rays of Departing Hope ",by Chris Fonvielle is a good read if you happen across it.

      Thanks again ,
