Were NCO belts commonly worn by Union musicians during the war or was the standard belt plate more common? I have seen pictures of musicians wearing both.

    Hello!

I have herd from my pard that some musicians didnt even go throught the Ordnance dept. The regular waist belt would of gotten issued with the rest of the soldiers leathers(Cart. Box, Cap box, Bayonet Scab., ect.). I have seen pictures of both musicians wearing/not wearing belts. Both standard plate and a few with the NCO plate.

    These pics from: http://howardlanham.tripod.com/illist.html

    These from http://www.Civilwarphotos.net

    Hope this helps!

      John,

One correction. The bugler with the horn to his lips is wearing a saber belt. Totally different thing than a NCO belt.

this is an image of the 4th michigan. In better copies you can see that the belt buckles are cross belt egales or more probaly NCO baldric plates which have hooks on. Hope this dosn't muddy the waters too much.
