On another, decidedly unrelated, note there is some great evidence in the court martial that Mark quoted on the soldiers' identification with the regiment as his primary source of cohesion, loyalty, etc. as argued by quite a few scholars.

Question by accused. When you say “our men” killed those of the rebels in the fence corners who do you mean by “our men.”
Answer. I mean by “our men” the men of the 10th Indiana regiment.
