  • Canteen with sock cover?

    Hello,

I posted this topic before the BIG CRASH and wanted to look at the picture again posted from the "Civil War Canteens" book. It's the bullseye or smoothside Federal canteen with a sock as a cover.

Does anyone have a good copy they could share?

    I'd appreciate it very much.

For provenance sake, where does the book say the original was located?

        Stopper String

That is a fine example of stopper string. It does not compare favorably with some of the string I have seen recently supplied with canteens.

The canteen's owner was Moses F. Carleton, Company I, 4th Mich. Inf. He enlisted as a private on Sept 26, 1864 and mustered out a lieutenant on May 26, 1866 at Houston. The book speculates that the sock is a result of the Schuylkill Arsenal's direction to reprocess used army material or a field alteration. (From Civil War Canteens by Sylvia and O'Donnell)
