The US Army may or may not have had standard USAQM spec pre-war extreme cold weather shoes, but by 1862 they were issuing buffalo overshoes (these would be modified in 1872 with as "high tops") to some troops. While a number of post-war civilian type buffalo overshoes exist in museums, none of the 1862 models appear to show up in the usual collections searches. Some museum or private collection out there probably has a pair or two of the army issue buffalo overshoes. Does anyone recall seeing a pair of these overshoes in good condition (suitable for measurement) in recent years?
(I can tell you first hand that Erasmus Hopkins would have loved to have owned a pair of these about 13 months ago.)
Thanks in advance....
