I would suppose the French influence upon the US millitary ever since it's conception during the revolution along with the fact that the French millitary was, at the time, considered by many to be the most tactically sound army of the era has a lot to do with it. Really, most of the fromal education of tactics were imported from Europe. Hence, I think in the minds of most, they go hand in hand. Whether it is justified or not is certianly up for dedate.
