Re: Armed SC "Palmetto Badge" image - eBay
It looks to be a reworked 1816 conversion or a reworked type flintlock.

Re: Armed SC "Palmetto Badge" image - eBay
I disagree that it is an 1816. The bands have been colored gold for a reason. There is no reason to color an 1816 band gold (replication of brass) but there is good reason to do so on a Palmetto Musket.
The stock seems to have a comb to it, as the M1842 did, and the M1816 did not. Palmetto muskets also had a comb.
The hammer appears to be the type of the M1842. Here is an original to compare with http://www.antiquearmsinc.com/images...e-musket-7.jpg Notice how tall the hammer is.
The flat on the stock opposite the lock seems to end in a rounded shape, as on the M1842, and not in a pointed shape as on the M1816.
The bayonet seems to have a locking ring, as on the M1842 and not on the M1816.
M1816s that were rifled and percussion converted did have sights added of several varieties, but none that I can think of had a tombstone type of rear sight like that. Palmetto muskets that were rifled and sighted had precisely that rear sight, in that location.
With all the above in mind, I am convinced that the is one of the muskets made by Wm. Glaze and Company or in part by the Flagg firm for the state of South Carolina, based on the US M1842.
What I find really neat is the extreme width of his cartridge box strap, and the seemingly cordoroy texture of his trousers.Last edited by Minieball577; 06-20-2007, 04:58 PM.~ Chris Hubbard

I think the winner bidder agrees with you. However, he'll now have to fork over $3,550.00 for his new purchase.

Dear Sir ,
Thanks for posting this superb photograph ! He appears to have a buckle on his kepi strap on his right side . The trousers seem to be striped or corded . Any idea of his regiment ?
all for the old flag,
