  • 4th Vermont Photo?

Anyone else see the photo on page 171 of the 4th Vermont upon mustering out of service in July, '65 in the book, "Civil War Times Illustrated: Private Soldiers and Public Heroes"? Those soldiers are dressed in every manner!!!

Personally, I feel it's not July of '65 but rather another month. The soldiers and civilians standing around don't seem to be in summer attire. I could be wrong.

Anyone have a good shot of this image?

Haven't seen the photo, don't have that particular publication. Any chance you can post it here, or there is a link?

I don't have a scanner handy. Even if I did, it may not do the image justice as scanners can loose the detail we like. It's a GREAT photo!!!

Almost every guy is dressed differently. Some even have their gear on UNDER their clothing! One guy has what looks like a tie-dyed coat on. If you can check it out, you'll see what I mean.... Good stuff!!!

I scanned this in for an event my unit was doing about 7 years ago, but it was done off my old scanner and it's very good quality. If I get a chance later in the weekend, I'll try to rescan with a better scanner.

Also, I would rule out the July 1865 thing, some summer mornings up in the mountains of Vermont can be quite cold.

          Mr. Daley,

          That's it!!! That's the one!!!

You have a point there on the weather. Never thought of that!

Just in looking at what you can see, the gent just off to the left-of-center has some type of funky coat on! I swear, I have something like that hanging behind my bathroom door that I wear after getting out of the shower...it's a robe!!!

Any idea what that could be???

          Thanks and best...

              James,

I've seen that same photo in high resolution and it appears the guy is wearing a banyan!

Attached is a close-up from another wetplate. This was taken in a Federal hospital and the larger version shows several recovering men wearing banyans.

The Vermonter in question may have wanted to muster out with a bang.

Banyan??? Never heard of that one!!! I'll have to "Google" that...

Anything else interesting in this photo to discusss? I think it's neat that some of the men have chosen to wear their traps UNDER their blouse or coat. With the banyan, and some of the other things they're wearing like slouch hats, they appear more like an "awkward squad" than seasoned campaigners!

                Best,

OK. I tried again to scan in this image. I think it's the poor photo quality in the book as I can usually play with the scanner to get a cleaner image, but here it is:
