They have some decent manuscript collections available. A quick scan didn't reveal any 44th Ohio info however there's some great accounts of service in Kentucky by William T. Chapman of the 103rd Ohio at this link

Being a Buckeye from Springfield, Ohio but living down here in Virginia, I was lucky to obtain the original and complete 13 volume set of the "Roster of OHIO SOLDIERS 1861-66". Volume IV states the following: "This Regiment was organized at Springfield, Ohio, from September 12 to October 14, 1861, to serve three years. Its designation was changed to the 8th Regiment Ohio Cavalry in January, 1864. The official list of battles, in which this Regiment bore an honorable part, is not yet published by the War Department, but the following list has been compiled after careful research, during the preparation of this work."

Lewisburg, W. VA May 23, 1862
Dutton's Hill, KY March 30, 1863

After reviewing the Roll of Honor of Ohio Soldiers in Volume IV for the 44th, a soldier from Company C and Company H were killed in action at Somerset, KY on March 30, 1863. Hope this helps out some.

Everett,

That type of simple bibliographic information used to be available on the USAMHI website, which was one of the most incredibly valuable sources of information for the CW. Unfortunately, with the onslaught of the disasterous AHEC concept, it appears the entire CW section has been eliminated once again. This happens periodically with budget cuts and internal program politics. Perhaps one day it will be restored. This time it appears there wasn't even enough money to place redirects. Neither their search engine nor quick links work these days, so who knows.

Of course, you can find out all sorts of trivial stuff about early 19th century air rifles. Sigh.
