  • 4th Alabama early war uniforms

    Hello to you all,

Can anyone provide some information about early 4th Alabama infantry uniforms around the time of First Manassas ?

The only company I found till now is company F, Huntsville Guards.

I'm especially interested how the uniforms of the Tuskegee Zouaves looked like, but all other companies are welcome. Did some companies wore the AVC uniforms ? ( Dark Blue Frock, grey trousers ? ).

    I especially want to know:

Headgear: hat or kepi, colour and trim if any
coat: batte shirt, frock or rondabout colour, trim
    trousers: colour and trim
equipment: white militia style belts or black leather
    extra's: gaiters, havelocks etc.

Some pictures would be great too !

If possible I am also interested in the early war uniforms of the 7th Georgia
(till summer 1861, after Manassas they were issued new uniforms ).

    Many thanks in advance.

    Best Wishes,

    See plate #668 here:

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana

The only other company of the 4th Alabama that we're sure about is Co. D, the Canebrake Rifle Guards. Below you'll find Company of Military Historians plate done by Keith Rocco of the CRG.

The other photograph is of the Huntsville Guards ca. 1986.

While there are many extant photographs of the 4th Alabama. There are not many of enlisted men ca. 1st Manassas.

We never found anything did we?

That was 21 years ago, I don't remember what I did last week.

              Hello Greg,

One question about the beautiful drawing of the Canebrake Rifle Guards, are these dress uniforms, or were these actually worn in battle, with the shako ?

              Best wishes,

I believe they were worn into Battle at First Manassas, those uniforms didn't last too long after July, 1861.
