  • Quilted Brimmed hat's Authentic ?

    Hello.

I am currently trying to research on The Quilted Civilian hat. I was reading through a Book at Borders the other night, which was called : Don Troiani's Civil war. Cavalry and Artillery.

    This Hat caught my eye.

I would like to know more. I did not buy the book but took a quick shot with my phone of the hat

Ive searched on here and on yahoo/google and found very little. Does anyone have any additional information?

    Thanks and Cheers :D

I recall General Lee was given one, he didn't much like it as I recall. Maybe I recall it being in the Musuem of Confederacy?

There is a picture of Gen. Lee's quilted hat in Echoes of Glory.

I would P.M. Nic Clark ( 'Iceman'... I believe?) He has done a lot of research on this hat. Frank Aufmuth has one that I believe was made by Nic. It is a bully hat though, and I'd say one worth representation.

        Hope this helps man.

P.S. Nic's 'user name' may predate the forum crash. Not sure.

I found the hat in my copy of Troiani's regiments and uniforms book the text next to the image reads "Quilted jean cloth hat worn by Pvt. Landon Cheek of the 1st Mississippi Cavalry. Of particularly sturdy construction, the crown has small ventillation holes to allow air to circulate" I also found in another book of mine that Pvt. Cheek was wounded three times during the war before he turned fifteen. Hope this helps.

            Re: Quilted Civilian Hat.

I came across a pattern for one from a costume shop. It was from a Godey's reprint. I believe there pattern dated to 1868. However they were common in the Civil War era as well. They called this a man's travelling hat. My computer is on the fritz, new one coming in. When I get it up and running, I will try to find the link and post it here.

PS EOG CS also has a soft hat made jean wool.

I believe Cody Mobly ( The Company Tailor) had those hats on his stite. As of yet I haven't seen them re-posted on his new site though. I thought it was an interesting piece as well !

I made one several years ago and it is a great late war Confederate hat, but one thing, they are HOT!!! I wore mine at Pickett's Mill and it really got to me, lol. Also if it gets wet, you are in for an experience.

                    Comrades,

On recent visits to Confederate Memorial Hall, N.O. La., I was totally stunned to find that they have 3 of them on display!! If I remember correctly they were of similar size and construction (sorry I was just a visitor and had no ability to messure) but were definately made by separate hands, (non-massed produced?). Most of their collection seems to be from Western (predominately La.) Units... perhaps these were more common than we think. Anyone within a few hours drive should visit this collection. It's right beside the D-Day Museum, easy to access, safe and rejuvenated section of the city, free, easy walking distance parking under the freeway, or pay to park across the street, the staff is friendly and one is a connoneer of long standing! Check their opening times because tourism is down, they'll have new (shorter) Winter hours; they really need our support! They have an excellent full color book that has tonnes of pictures from the collection at least one of the hats is therein displayed... I gave mine away for Christmas, perhaps someone else has a copy for a photo? Great topic, hope someone else has more info.

If memory serves, and that can be iffy, that same hat in photo is also in EOG, caption stating it was made out of jeancloth. Ill confirm this when I get home from the Salt Mines.

Fellow from the outfit camped next to us at Perryville had one. It seems like he said he got it from TMD, although a friend in my outfit who gets a lot of stuff from there said that he'd never heard of them selling one.

One of the young guns had one at Perryville on the Farm early this year, I believe he got it either Company Tailor or Trans Miss Dept. Whoever had them on their site, and boy was I green with envy..............fantastic copy of a great hat.

Cody Mobley (Company Tailor) used to advertise them on his site. He had some nice pics to boot, but his site is (I believe) undergoing a revamp.
