  • 1861 artillery jacket

In reading the Richmond Dispatch of 1861 I found an entry referring to the uniforms of the 1st Maryland Artillery.

    August 17, 1861
--The officers of this admirable company are A. Snowden Andrews, of Baltimore, Captain; William F. Dement, of Charles, First Lieutenant; Charles Contee, of Prince George, Second Lieutenant; F. Dabney, of Mississippi, Third Lieutenant. The company consists of one hundred men, all Marylanders save four Mississippians. Their battery consists of one rifled cannon, two 12-pounders and three 12-pound howitzers. They have been encamped near the Reservoir, where men and horses have undergone a strict course of drill, preparatory to being ordered upon active service. High expectations have been entertained of this corps, which has been a great favorite in Richmond, and is composed of the sons of many of the oldest and best families in lower Maryland. Their uniform is in color a light grey, almost white, from which it can hardly be distinguished at a distance — kepi, jacket and trousers being all of the same color, relieved by scarlet trimmings. The Maryland Artillery left Richmond yesterday morning.

Can anyone provide any insight to the cloth used and any vendor who produces such a cloth in the referenced color?

    Thanks!
