I'm reading "Soldier of Southwestern Virginia" which is a collection of letters from a SW Va. cavalryman to his sweetheart. In early 1861 he mentions that his militia comapany has had great difficulty in obtaining cloth from the Richmond area to make uniforms for the troops. He then goes on to state that they will have to make do with "Thomas Jeans" and that they will "perhaps be better than anything for service".
I'm assuming that Thomas Jeans were some type of jean cloth, but I've been unsuccessful in finding anything. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
