I ment no offense Dan.It's just that there is no good place around here to get plain white newspaper. That is one disadvantage with living in a town with less then 2,000 people in it.

Now, I use the 3M Masking brand paper sold at many U.S. hardware stores and hardware-department store sections, as well as paint shops likes Sherwin -Williams. Although a wee bit too darkish brownish yellow, it is "within the range" of the darker range of CW wrapping papers... kinda/sorta/mostly.

Cullen, no offense taken. Just wanted to clerify what I used. If there is a newspaper anywhere near you they should have end rolls.

It is a very interesting information I find, if somebody has information on that, I want them very also, me of my part, I see what existed in France and in Europe in the same period...

I'll have to agree with Curt, butcher paper is my preferred stuff. We use it at the fort as well for all our cartridges.

I go for the newsprint, as well.

One time at a recent Authentic event, I found some dropped cartridges on the ground... wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper (colored side OUT) and stapled closed! Must have been a late war thing ;)

Re: Which type of paper be used to make your cartridges

According to a book written by C. Fuller about the British P-53 musket/rifle some of the paper was so thick that the soldiers complained about how hard it was to tear. Also the British color coded the paper according to caliber and the author mentions that some of these cartridges were exported. Many assume that all cartridge paper was brown but white paper will brown after years of age.

Re: Which type of paper be used to make your cartridges

I, too, use the end rolls of newsprint. My wife used to deliver newspapers, so I was able to get them for free. Two rolls have lasted me about five years - several hundred cartridges hence - with many more hundred in the furture.

As an side note...what paper do you use for Union arsenal pack? (St. Loius arsenal)Samples I have seen are more white than off-white. I currently use the paper packed in boxes of picture framing glass (between the sheets of glass). It has a smooth surface, but durable, and is a little shiny - almost like a wax-protective surface. It folds and works well.

Re: Which type of paper be used to make your cartridges

Jeff Henion's six-month study of this very topic in 2001 included measuring with a micronmeter the thickness of original cartridge papers versus fairly available modern alternatives. He also evaluated things like color and appearance of the paper (fiber content, etc.), although these matters were, of course, more subjective than the paper-thickness measurements. His conclusion was that the best modern expedient for more-accurate reprodutions of Civil War cartridges for rifle-muskets and muskets is masking paper such as the type manufactured by 3M Corp, available at any hardware store in the painting section.

3M's masking paper is a good deal thicker and stiffer than the much-more pliable newsprint-type paper used by many reenactors.

Jeff's results are summarized in his essay on small-arms ammunition of the Civil War included in The Columbia Rifles Research Compendium.

OK, it is good, it is exactly the type of paper that I use, I had not realized that we use too the English name of "masking" for this type of paper and the adhesive tape with painting...
