1864 American flag found in museum closet

HARTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. , 1864 Flag
    Jan 8, 2008

HARTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. A 36-star American flag has been unfurled at a Livingston County museum in Hartland Township.

The Hartland Area Historical Society recently found the flag, which would have been flown shortly after Nevada became a state in 1864.

Collections chairwoman Nadine Cloutier told The Detroit News on Monday that it was rolled up in a sheet inside a broom closet at the Florence B. Dearing Museum.

Dan Wambaugh told me last year, all they had was original WWII items. So its cool to find out that they had found this flag.

The flag is one of the first artifacts donated to the museum in 1958 by resident Mae Dexter.

Cloutier says it will cost about $8,000 to restore and mount.

Just a little info i found online today!
    Interesting huh?
    :)

    Cheers,

    John

        John,

They also have a nearly priceless, and nearly destroyed USMC overseas uniform from the Great War. The uniform sat on a dummy in a window for probably six or seven decades until the back half was bleached white.

I dearly hope that they take better care of the flag than they did this rare uniform. That museum is not known for its good reputation, the only active preservation efforts that I knew to go on there were when a former AC moderator volunteered there one summer. Otherwise I was pretty saddened to see the way some of their donated artifacts were treated.

Refusing to end this post on a negative note, however, I do invite any forum member in the metro Detroit area to travel the twenty minutes north on I-75 to Ortonville, where their mill museum has done a superb job of honoring their local veterans, basically turning their second story into a shrine to the sacrifice of the local men from the Civil War on up. This exhibit is largely the result of the work of one man, Lee Stewart, who tirelessly turned an old attic space into one of the foremost military displays in the state. Like all small town museums the Ortonville Mill Museum constantly struggles with funding problems, so if you have an extra hour or two it is definitely worth your while to head up and patronize them!
