Re: Cartridge Boxes worn on the belt???
Gents,
This image clearly supports (pardon the pun) the notion that the box was worn without the shoulder sling. Notice the broken seems on the box...
Great Thread!

Michael,
Nice close up image. Interesting how cartridge boxes carrying weight wear out differently than those carrying powder. Please include the source, if you have it, of the photo where this detail is from so that it can be put in context.Troy Groves "AZReenactor"

So, you think that scrap in the East is rough, do you?
Ever consider what it means to be captured by Apaches?

Hello.
Thanks for the post. These are close ups from the two famous Alsop Farm pictures of CS dead. Please acknowledge colleague OldState above for his work in bringing these to the Thread.
I just enhanced them.
Respectfully.

Re: Cartridge Boxes worn on the belt???
Another aspect of these dead on Alsop's farm is that both this one and his companion shown in another picture are wearing new looking RD jackets which appear may be made of thick wool and have US eagle buttons attached. The split canteen strap seems to contradict ODonnell's new canteen book which states that they were early war (1862) and were discontinued.Jim Mayo

Thanks Steve,
I like the material of the trousers. Look at the weave; could it be a Jean Cloth material?

Re: Cartridge Boxes worn on the belt???
I came across this shot a few months ago. I never knew the two guys fromm both Alsop Farm pictures were only a few yards apart. See the other fellow blurry in the background?
We can also see Federal buttons on the guy by the fence in this angle. The cartridge box flap bend back is also of interest. I could look at the LOC pictures for hours....and have!
Here are the buttons:
Can you guys click and enlarge these? I don't know why they are not inserted as a thumbnail.
Michael, howdya post that pic so large??Last edited by OldState; 02-05-2009, 07:43 PM."God created Man...Sam Colt made us equal."

Michael, can you enlarge the pic I posted of the rifle stacks? There are two boxes hung on belts there. One box is a "late war" with the "US" embossed on the leather."God created Man...Sam Colt made us equal."

Re: Cartridge Boxes worn on the belt???
Here is some evidence of how the men may have been dealing with the weight of a full cartridge box. Although it may just refering to extra rounds issued.
GENERAL ORDERS,
HDQRS. DEPT. OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA,
Numbers 68.
June 14, 1862.
II. Great waste of ammunition is reported from the practice of issuing packages of cartridges to be carried in pockets of the men. This is prohibited, except where men are about to engage the enemy. All injured ammunition will be turned in to the regimental ordnance sergeants for remanufacture at Richmond, and commanding officers of regiments will see that company commanders make frequent inspections of the ammunition in charge of their men, and that this order is strictly enforced.
By command of General Lee:
R. H. CHILTON,
Assistant Adjutant-General.Last edited by OldState; 02-05-2009, 11:02 PM."God created Man...Sam Colt made us equal."
