  • Correct mounting of the rifle-musket leather sling?

What is the correct way to sling/mount/attach the Springfield or Enfield rife-musket leather sling to the weapon?

Does the hook go through the upper sling swivel, or lower sling swivel? Is the hook supposed to be on the inside, or the outside?

I've seen it done a few different ways and was wondering if there was a "correct" way.

One of our guys in Sykes' Regualrs was studying some of the LOC pics to try to answer this same question and his conclusion was that there was no one consistent way of attaching the sling. The main thing is to make sure you have the right sized sling. For the '55, '61 and '63 Springfields the sling should be 46". It should be long enough to run twice between the two sling swivels and overlap several inches before hooking together.
