  • Auction items from the Charleston Mercury, June 17, 1863

I came across a reprint last week and thought the auction lists might be of interest. There were also a terrible number of people being auctioned or otherwise sold.
Note: the last auction on the list is not lacking numbers; it simply says "cases tobacco" or what have you.

    "Kegs Carb Soda"

A question on this: How would carbonated water ("spa water" or "soda water" to them back then) or any carbonated beverage (ginger beer, etc?), have been kept fizzy in a barrel back then? The process of making artificially-cerbonated water has been around for awhile (mid-1700s and into commercial production in the late 1700s to 1800s by Schweppes in England), but how did they contain the fizzy from going flat?

I can't seem to find solid research leads on this forum for period-correct ways to do this or how this was handled in the period.

Perhaps if someone could have caulked a barrel extra well to hold-in the fizz, this could have worked. How about a ceramic or pottery jar of some sort? But then, wouldn't the barrel or jar would have to be kept under immense pressure to do this (like a modern-day 2-liter bottle of coke). Were there period patents for a container like this?

Of course, ignore this question if the above refers to kegs of bicarbonate of soda in solid form... joke :)
