"From the booming of the cannon, the dull sound of the musket and the sharp crack of the rifle about 10 o'clock last night, we presume that the anticipated sham battle came off and that somebody won or lost a victory — probably an Austrian swallowed a sardine. We did not hear from that big gun and therefore conclude that no breaching operations were necessary. What an outrage, when a fellow is pouring his tale of love into the ear of his sweetheart, to hear the roll of the drum and the order to 'fall in,' 'march out and fight!' But it is an old saying that 'every sweet has its bitter.'"
