    Franklin, TN reading list help...

    Have recently taken with a beautiful gal from from Franklin, TN and am interested in reading up on the actions there. She got me the book, "Five Tragic Hours; The Battle of Franklin", by McDonough and Connelly and I was interested in other sources regarding the battle. Moreover, am looking for any common soldier minutae related to the Civil War activity there. All posts appreciated.

    Marler, I heard you were dead!! ;)

    Yankee Tigers, by Ralsa Rice, has some information about the Federal occupation of the town. Only part of the book, but the book should be read by all history buffs.

    Wiley Sword's book, whose title escapes me at the moment, is also pretty good.

    The women of Franklin and Williamson County tend to be prettier than elsewhere.

            Those titles Joe and Matt mentioned are of course actually the same book. Just a word of caution though- do not read it aloud in her presence, if you want her continued company! :D

              Shrouds of Glory by Winston Groom

              The Confederacy's Last Hurrah by Wiley Sword is a very detailed work on Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville

                Nope...still kickin'! According to my pard Ryan Meyer I've just been spending to much time with those "armies of the east".
                Guess it's high time I get back to the Western Theatre.

                    I have read each of the books mentioned in this thread and all are good. I never thought I would find a better book than W. Sword's "Embrace an Angry Wind" (also released later as the Confederacy's Last Hurrah), but recently I was given a copy of a new book on the Battles of Spring Hill and Franklin entitled "For Cause, For Country" by Eric A. Jacobson and it may take the prize as the best and most clearly laid out of all of them. I really felt I understood the sequence of events that brought about the debacle at Spring Hill and the explanation of Hood's frontal assault on the breastworks at Franklin was extremely well done. I suggest this book to all of you regardless of your experience in this campaign. It is distributed by O'More Publishing (615-794-4254 and I know that they sell it at Carnton.

                      If I am not mistaken, E. Jacobson is the Historian at Carnton. He is an outstanding speaker and expert on the Battle of Franklin. There are several videos of him conducting programs about Franklin on Youtube and several other websites/blogs. If you ever get a chance to attend one of the programs that he does, check it out, you won't be disappointed.

                        "For Cause, For Country" is definately the definitive book on Franklin as it stands with Embrace An Angry Wind being second.

                          Hey Lee...long time no see. Can't remember when I last saw you. Might have been when Brumagin was still there. Anyways, thanks for your input. BTW, do you know the driving time between Franklin, TN and Chattanooga?

                            Roughly, Franklin to Chattanooga is 2 1/2 hours, depending on the fog on Monteagle. However, this weekend, during the Bonaroo Music Festival, all bets are off. I-24 will back for miles in both directions.

                              John, Must have been, it was a long time ago. All too well, right at 2 hours and 20 minutes as I have been making that trip about once a week for the past month, lol. As Joe said, Mont Eagle is the factor though with rain or accidents, etc. With Bonaroo it might be more like 12 hours, lol.
