From R. J. Oglesby, colonel commanding 8th Ill Inf to Thomas Mather, asst adjustant general , state of Illinois, dated Oct. 25, 1861 at Bird's Point, MO (across the river from Cairo)

"... I have never received a national or regtl color would it not be a good idea for the state to furnish a regulation national flag to each regt. and I would take it as a special honor if his excellency would see to furnishing my regiment with a regimental color with the arms of the United States in proper style and on the reverse some handsome state device and motto, say the state arms with the motto No peace to Rebels or something better than that."

The letter also mentioned items regarding officer commission and elections (attn. J Butler: Deitrich Smith being elected 2nd lt. dated Sept. 1, 1861)

Oglesby also tossing in: "...When these commissions shall have been received my regtl organization will be complete - excepting 1000 minnie muskets which I hope you will coax the governor to send to me."
