Black Confederate Soldiers

An article in the Washington Post has created an uproar over a textbook distrubuted to fourth graders n the Virgina school system.

In this book, written by Joy Masoff, it is claimed that thousands of Blacks fought on the Confedrate side as soldiers.

After reading the article, I figured the best place to find out the real skinny would be here. Is there a consensus, or is this basically a great ugh-known?
