  • Cole's Calvary, Adams Co PA and Frederick Co. MD

Does anyone know of a published diary or unit history of Cole's Calvary?

Henry Cole entered the service as Captain of Company A, on August 10, 1861. He was then promoted to Major, August 1, 1862; Lieutenant- Colonel; March 5, 1864; Colonel, April 20, 1864. During the siege of Harper's Ferry, Va., on September, 1862, the commanding officer of the beleaguered garrison desiring to communicate with General McClellan and the Army of the Potomac, sent for Major Cole, and advised him of his wishes in the premises. Major Cole volunteered his services, passed through the enemy's lines, delivered the dispatch in person, and received the thanks of General McClellan. Colonel Cole mustered out of service on June 28, 1865.

One other thing this unit does not seem to have a PA connection however the "1st Maryland Cavalry" is mustered in PA, DC, and MD. It's on that website as well.

Re: Cole's Calvary, Adams Co PA and Frederick Co. MD

        Hello Guys,

I was tasked with a Cole's Cavalry, Company C project back in the late 1990's for the Emmitsburg Area Historical Society. Through donations of photographs, dairies and letters, everything I have is posted on their web site. Mark Dudraw and Robert Moore II, really helped out with the photographs. Also Dan Toomey co-authored a book about Maryland Union Cavalry and Artillery units. Here is a link to Company C, Cole's Cavalry. http://www.emmitsburg.net/archive_li...es_cavalry.htm

Right now, I am transcribing a day to day dairy of Joseph Wible who served in Co. C and was from Gettysburg. Company C was formed in Gettysburg, Pa, and since Pa was not raising any cavalry units, Captain John Horner crossed the Mason and Dixon Line into Emmitsburg, Maryland where his ranks swelled from Maryland men.
