  • National Tribune Digitized & Searchable

I wasn't completely sure if the community was already aware of this resource or not, but because I've seen the Tribune mentioned several times across the board through the years and because I've utilized it heavily in my own research, I wanted to ensure that all had access to this amazing publication.

For those of you not familiar with the National Tribune, the paper was published in Washington D.C. (but distributed nationally) weekly from 1877 to 1917 and served as a kind of medium for Federal (and several Confederate) vets to share their memories and discuss the war itself. Several classic memoirs of the conflict were first published in the paper and critiqued by the vets themselves before being published in book form and sold retail. The sheer volume of personal anecdotes and first-person accounts is mesmerizing if I do say so myself. That is, however, provided you can stomach all of the conflicting claims (and subsequent argument) to having placed the first US flag over the capitol at Richmond, having been the first to recapture DeGress's guns at Atlanta, or the first to top Lookout Mountain.

Unfortunately, there is no workable index for the publication (yet), although the paper has recently be been digitized by the Library of Congress "Chronicling America" project and is viewable for free online. The paper is searchable utilizing OCR technology, but the researcher is cautioned against the inevitable slip-ups of OCR, and unfortunately it requires a little bit of leg-work sometimes to find exactly what you're looking for.

    Enjoy!

    Happy Holidays everyone!
