  • Silas Claiborne Turnbo Manuscripts Online

As the Wilson’s Creek event rapidly approaches I would like to share an interesting resource that I have been made aware of by my local library in the form of online manuscripts. Silas Claiborne Turnbo was a resident of the area that spent a great deal of time transcribing Ozarks history and culture of the mid to late 19th century, including his service during the war. These manuscripts provide valuable insight into the lives of those in the area during the time of the struggle and I hope they are found of interest. The second URL below is a direct link to a short transcription of "Wilson Creek".

These were always a great read. I actually have a anscestoral family member,Silas Hook, he was just a boy19-20 if I rememebr right) named in volume three "A Horrible Execution". It goes along with our family history as well.
His mother's Strong anti-southern sentiments went with her to her grave. Being from East Tennessee and migrating some 27 years prior. She never forgave the Southern people.

    "...And to Missouri we
    Extend both heart and hand
    And welcome her a sister
    Of our Confederate band
    Tho surrounded by oppression
    No one dare deter
Her adding to our Bonnie Blue Flag
Her bright and twelfth star! "

Lyrics, Bonnie Blue Flag, by Harry McCarthy, 1861.
