  • 1st/2nd Maryland Inf. CSA?

    All,

Does anyone know of any good books, websites, or research items that cover these units? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Chris,

A while ago a buddy of mine was doing a bit of research on Maryland in the Civil War. Below are some links to books he read pertaining to Maryland and more specifically the 1st and 2nd MD Infantry (CS).

    The First and Second Maryland
Infantry, C.S.A. by Robert J. Driver Jr.

    and

    The Maryland Line in
the Confederate Army (1861-1865) by W.W. Goldsborough

    Hope this helps!

Just an FYI we have a living history next weekend in Winchester, VA at Glen Burnie (Museum of the Shenandoah Valley). It's the anniversary of the mustering in of the 1st Maryland. It's going to be a nice event so you should come over and check it out.

            Frank,

Thank you for the info, infact I have read both of those. I'm sorry, I should have emphasized. Any other besides those two?

                        Re: 1st/2nd Maryland Inf. CSA?

                        Chris,

What exactly are you looking for? Material culture? Battles and campaigns? First person applicable (ie: background info, etc. on men/companies) stuff? Also, for 1st and 2nd, or just one or the other? And if just 1st, Winchester companies only, or Richmond companies as well?

You would do well to "camp out" with Ross Kimmell's writings, which are just about the end-all when it comes to the material culture aspect of CS Marylanders. I can recall more than once back in the old days that I made a special trip to Ft. Frederick just to pick Ross' brain. He's probably forgotten more about Maryland Confederates than most of us will ever know.

If it's minutae you're looking for, I've got a large amount of stuff on 1/H and 2/B as well as pre-war Southern MD info (militia groups, local history, etc.) that I collected between about 1983 and 1996. Let me know if that is of any interest to you.

Also, if you can track down Jim Tennyson (in the Gettysburg area) he's got a lot of really top notch MD info, as well. Dirty Billy Wickham should be able to put you right in touch with him.

                        Best,

Another very good book about what happened to Maryland during the Civil War, how it was "forced" to stay with the Union and other really great info I never new about.
It's called, Maryland, the Souths first casualty by Bart Rhett Talbert (ISBN 1883522021). I spoke to him after the books release and he said that Salisbury University (Maryland) was not too pleased with him because the content was not politicaly correct even though it was baised of fact from many primary sources.
