  • Incidents of the War: Humorous, Pathetic, and Descriptive by Alf Burnett

While Mr. Burnett was a humorist, most of this book is a running account of life around northwestern Virginia from 1861-63. There are some amazing tidbits, like the families who had no idea there was a war on, torrential rains along the Elkwater headwaters forcing the Ninth Ohio out of camp, supply problems leading to marked irregularities in uniform...it's a rich book to mine, but not one I'd ever run into:

There is poetry scattered throughout, some Burnett's, some collected along the way. Also, there is a nice stock of period humor, some of which takes a bit of thought for the modern mind.

    Becky,

I have an original copy of this book signed by John F Horr, who was a 2nd Lt in the 2nd OVI and dated by him March 23rd 1865. Most of the accounts have to do with actions in the Tennessee such as Perryville and Stones River.
