  • A new use for tin canteens?----- New York Times 1862

    Published: April 23, 1862

THE "FRENCH LADY" ATTEMPTS TO ESCAPE. -- On Monday night, THOMAS, who is better known as the "French Lady," for having passed out of Baltimore in woman's attire, last Summer, attempted to escape from the hospitable mansion of Col. BURKE, near Fort Hamilton. It is said that he obtained a number of tin canteens, and corking them tightly, used them as buoys in an attempt to swim beyond the immediate jurisdiction of those who look after his welfare at Fort Lafayette. A sentinel discovered an object floating in the water, an alarm was given, a boat launched and Mr. THOMAS was again restored to terra firma and Government rations.
