  • 12th South Carolina Returns

I am trying to locate any of the returns, rosters, or any other papers for the 12th SC.

If someone could recomend a Library, Museum ect to start with, I have no clue of where to start.

    Thanks

You could try the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Museum and The South Carolina State Museum and see what they have in their respective collections.

Thanks for the lead, But they only have limited records available. Looks like pension records compiled in 1958.

Are there any books about Co I of the 12th?

        Thanks

          Mike,

You're not looking in the right place. I just went and checked myself. They have plenty of records listed by soldier. You have to pay for a subscription but it's worth it.

From the home page: hit browse records > Civil War > Civil War Service Records > Confederate Records > South Carolina > then scroll down till you start seeing 12th S.C. it's broken down by the mens last initials.

                Sir-

You may be interested in an image of a Lancaster Hornet at the Library of Congress. I've tried to post it here but the system is being stubborn. You can find the image at

                Liljenquist Family Collection

The Hornet, J.P. Robertson, is top row far right.

                I'm guessing you're with Ben Cwayna's unit?

My ggg grandfather, Burrell Hancock was in the 12th Company I. I do have rosters but will have to scan them. Sgt. Hancock is listed in the book as being with the 12th at Appomattox. Colonel Dixon Barnes of Lancaster, SC was killed as a result of turning the flank at Sharpsburg. He had both legs amputated and died a few days later.

Yes Im with Mr Cwayna's 12th.

                    Thanks,
As a vetran myself, I like to find out about a few soilders from the unit im in and learn a little about them. Where their from, what they did before and after the war, ect. Also to see specificly what equipment they were issued and where they were.

Thanks for the info on the picture.

If you could scann that for me sometime that would be GREAT!!

What is the best source for their records? Did many survive?

                    Thanks
